Liver Disorder (Yakrit Vikar)
In charak Samhita Liver is referred to as Yakrit and is mentioned as Marma(vital organ), Sthana of Ranjak pitta. It is the place where Rasdhatu is transformed into Rakta dhatu and is Mula sthana of Raktavaha strotas.
Liver is a detoxifying factory in the body and maintenance of healthy Liver is vital to overall health and we'll being.
Liver has many vital functions,some of them are listed below:
- Bile production - Bile is a fluid that us important for digestion and absorption.
- Detoxification - All the blood leaving the stomach and intestines passes through the Liver which removes toxins, byproducts, bacteria and other harmful substances.
- Regulates blood clotting
- Stores vitamins such as vit A, D, E, K and B12 along with copper and iron is stored in Liver.
- Processes glucose,the liver removes excess glucose from the bloodstream and stores it as glycogen.
- Hormones - The liver manufactures breakdown and regulates hormones like thyroid hormones ,cortisone and other adrenal hormones.
Common Liver disorders:
1. Hepatitis (Kamala)
It is the inflammation of liver which can be caused due to virus, bacteria, parasites, toxins, drugs, autoimmunity and alcohol abuse. Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E are types of Hepatitis along with alcoholic Hepatitis. In ayurved it is called as Kamala. In charak samhita it is described as advanced stage of panduroga and is classified into Kosthashrit and Kshakashrit Kamala. As the name suggest the kosthashrith Kamala is localized to gut and pitta dosha can be easily removed by panchkarma like virechan. Kshakhashrit Kamala where as is located in body tissues in the form of obstructed pitta and treatment includes virechan and Nasya virechan. Herbs like kutaki, Triphala, Kalmegha, Haritaki, Aragwadha are very useful. Certain foods like Moongdal yush old kshasti rice, buttermilk, kushmand are mentioned in charak samhita.
2. Fatty Liver (Sthaulaya)
It is the most common disease of liver caused by metabolic disorder or lifestyle disorder affecting a wide range of populate population worldwide. Fat exists in Liver naturally but when it surpasses 5-10% of the liver's total weight it can result in fatty liver which in turn causes inflammation in liver. Alcohol abuse also cause fatty liver which is called Alcoholic fatty liver, other causes of fatty liver are obesity, insulin resistance, tl triglycerides, hypertension, and some hormonal imbalance. Non Alcoholic fatty liver is commonest and more serious form of it is called NASH (Non Alcoholic steatohepatitis).
Fatty liver treatment in Ayurved:
For treating fatty liver Ayurved recommend
1 - Nidanparivarjan that is reversal of cause
2 - Agnideepan
3 - Shanshodhan
4 - Santarpan
Here vurechan works best along with herbs like Bhumyaamalaki ,Triphala,Sharpunkha,Guduchi works well.
3. Cirrhosis (Yakruddalyudara)
It is the end stage of many chronic liver diseases. Severe scarring of liver is caused by long term exposure to toxins, drugs, alcohol, viral infections resulting in Cirrhosis. The fibrosis which converts liver cells into abnormal nodules replaces the healthy Liver cells with scar tissues eventually leading to liver failure. Most common presentation of advanced Cirrhosis is Ascites which is called Jalodara in ayurved.
Treatment in Ayurved:
In Treatment part most important is Nityavirechan and snehpana.
Use of cow milk, buttermilk ,and Gomutra finds special mention in charak samhita.
Along with these herbs like Rohitak, Pippali, Haritaki, Vidang, Punarnava are very useful.
